いのちを育む“見えない力” The Invisible Force that Nurtures Life

“How can these crops grow so vibrantly without any fertilizers or pesticides?” This is a common remark from visitors to farms practicing Shumei Natural Agriculture. The leaves stretch wide and strong, the soil is soft and fluffy, and the crops grow vigorously—as if guided by their own will.

At the heart of this method lies the belief that nature itself is inherently filled with the power to nurture life. Sunlight and warmth provide the fundamental energy for plant growth. The phases of the moon influence the rhythms of the tides and are believed to affect underground water movement and root absorption. And soil—it receives, supports, and nurtures all life.
Many invisible processes are constantly at work in the natural world. Mokichi Okada, founder of this agricultural philosophy, called this unseen yet vital force “Natural Power X.”
The “X” represents something unknown, yet undoubtedly present. It may not yet be fully understood by science, but we can feel it—something quietly and surely at work. That is Natural Power X.

土に感謝するということ Gratitude to soil

For a long time, we have relied on the use of fertilizers and pesticides to increase yields. These practices were born of human ingenuity and technological progress. However, in their convenience, we have also witnessed a decline in the innate power of the soil. The continuous application of chemical or excessive organic fertilizers has weakened the soil, disrupting its natural balance.

As a result, crops have become more susceptible to pests and diseases, and their flavor and vitality have diminished. It may be no surprise, then, that vegetables from decades ago are said to have had significantly higher nutritional value.
Okada taught that soil is, by its nature, a concentrated force of life. And when Natural Power X is abundant in the soil, there is no need to add anything artificial. Natural Power X is the essential nourishment for crops.
To draw out this force, no special materials or technologies are needed. What matters most is our mindset.

“To appreciate the soil, keep it pure, and treat it with respect.”
“To treat crops as living beings, and cultivate them with love and care.”

Through our experiences, we have learned that such respectful and thoughtful attitudes help restore the invisible cycles within the soil, allowing Natural Power X to work more fully.
In Natural Agriculture, what’s emphasized is not adding more—but refraining from adding what is unnecessary. Though it requires patience, the soil gradually regains its strength, and the crops grow slowly, naturally, and wholesomely.

One farmer shared this reflection:
“When I sow seeds while saying, ‘Please take care of them,’ the germination becomes unexpectedly uniform.”
“And when I water the vegetables every morning while saying ‘Thank you,’ the leaves appear greener—almost as if they’re responding.”

Perhaps these experiences can’t be measured by science.
Yet it is precisely this kind of subtle awareness that speaks to the workings of Natural Power X.

Today’s agriculture faces many challenges—climate change, soil degradation, and food safety among them. In such a time, Natural Agriculture—which listens to nature’s rhythms and embraces the continuity of life—is gaining attention as a path toward a more sustainable future.
Natural Power X may be gently working from within the soil, responding to our gratitude and respect. It is a quiet force—a gift from nature that nurtures all life.
