Shigaraki no Sato

Birds chirp in the thickets and a clear stream rushes by. Unknown flowers bloom and compete in the fields, lush terraced rice paddies glisten in the sun, and fields spread out around reed-thatched houses, their ripe crops changing colors.

Shumei Shizen Nouhou Shigaraki no Sato has revitalized the satoyama lifestyle, which was the contact point between people and nature, in order to once again restore a way of life based on “respect for nature and adaptation to nature. Crops are grown in rice paddies and fields without using fertilizers or pesticides, and traditional “okudosan (kamado)” are used in private homes. The modern way of living in harmony with nature is practiced here.

Old private homes are a traditional Japanese architectural style, made of natural materials and designed to harmonize with the surrounding environment, symbolizing the history and culture of the region. Like the philosophy of natural farming, the building itself embodies a symbiosis with nature. The use of an old private house as an office demonstrates that traditional buildings and modern activities can coexist. This is similar to how nature farming respects traditional farming methods while developing them as modern sustainable agriculture.

While preserving traditions, it shows continuity from the past to the future and respect for coexistence with nature, and symbolizes an attitude of creating new values. It sends the message that living with nature is possible and a desirable choice even in modern life.

It is said that when people are separated from nature, they lose their humanity. The uneasiness of the modern world is probably not unrelated to urban life, where people no longer even have the opportunity to come into contact with the soil. We hope that through the experience at Shigaraki no Sato, you will reconsider the preciousness of living in harmony with nature, a way of life that modern people have forgotten.
