自然農法における堆肥とは The Role of Compost in Natural Agriculture

In Natural Agriculture, we aim to cultivate crops without using any agricultural chemicals or fertilizers, instead harnessing the full power of nature. This vital force is called “Natural Power X”—the fundamental life energy created through the harmonious interaction of sunlight, water, and the earth. Mokichi Okada, the founder of this agricultural method, believed that this Natural Power X is the true fertilizer, and drawing it forth is the most important task in farming.

Within this framework, the concept of compost also takes on a unique perspective. While compost is generally regarded as a “fertilizer” that provides nutrients to crops, in Shumei Natural Agriculture, it is considered something fundamentally different—a supplementary means to help create a well-balanced soil environment.

The natural compost used in Shumei Natural Agriculture consists of organic materials such as grasses and fallen leaves. No artificial additives or treatments are used. As it naturally decomposes, the compost gently improves the soil’s characteristics. Its primary roles include:

  1. Warming the soil: Compost applied to the surface helps maintain soil temperature, making it easier for roots to spread.
  2. Preventing dryness: A compost layer on the soil prevents excessive moisture loss and helps retain adequate humidity.
  3. Keeping soil soft: Compost improves aeration and prevents soil from becoming compacted.

Through these functions, an environment more conducive to the expression of Natural Power X is gradually established.

This is especially important in newly converted fields, where the soil may be depleted due to the past use of fertilizers and pesticides. Natural compost works effectively in helping the soil regain its original vitality.

In this sense, compost acts as a “quiet assistant” that supports the formation of soil in which Natural Power X can thrive. Whether or not to use compost is determined by the condition of each field. Once the soil has been restored, crops can grow healthily even without the use of compost.

In Shumei Natural Agriculture, there are no rigid rules regarding compost use. It may be used when needed, and omitted when unnecessary. This flexibility is one of its defining features.

However, compost is strictly a supplementary method—it is not something that should be used more and more for better results. What must lie at the heart of practice is the conviction in the power of nature.

As the farmer continues with Natural Agriculture, the soil gradually regains its inherent power, and Natural Power X becomes fully active. Mokichi Okada referred to such soil as “ideal soil”—a condition in which natural energy resonates throughout, and crops grow by directly absorbing nature’s blessings.

Therefore, the use of natural compost is seen as a “transitional stage.” Farmers listen to the voice of the soil and apply compost as needed to restore its health, but ultimately strive to grow crops without relying on it.

Entrusting the process to Natural Power X and continuing a dialogue with the soil—this is the path toward a sustainable and wholesome future of food.
